GTEA is always welcoming new members to the union. It proudly represents professional educators like you, offering two enrollment options. Gateway educators are automatically enrolled in the free level. Educators can pay monthly dues and receive additional benefits.
Why pay dues? The dues level increases your ability to participate in bargaining, supporting your students and colleagues. It also offers more benefits to your family and you.
In addition, your dues increase the union's strength, allowing it to bargain with greater resources and leverage. Paying dues is paying yourself. Your dues ultimately provide you with higher wages, better benefits, and secure working conditions.
See the comparison table and benefit descriptions for details.
Bargaining representation
GTEA will represent you and all Gateway educators at the bargaining table. Unions typically bargain for wages, benefits, and working conditions. Following Wisconsin statutes, GTEA currently bargains for wages. Future changes to statutes may allow GTEA to bargain for benefits and working conditions.
Gateway workplace information
GTEA shares information about the college and working conditions with all members. All members are invited to annual meetings for food, camaraderie, and updates. All members can follow our Facebook page for timely information. Our president posts regular messages or updates through the Gateway email. GTEA representatives on all campuses are eager to share information and listen to your concerns.
Financial resources
Members have access to insurance, retirement investments, and financial planning specialized for Wisconsin educators. Since 1972, WEA Benefits has provided financial resources and services to Wisconsin public school employees like you. It provides insurance, including auto, car, life, and long-term care policies. It provides nationally recognized retirement and investment services. It helps you manage your budget and future with financial planning tools and professionals.
Bargaining participation
Dues-paying members are invited to participate in bargaining. They can run for positions that do the bargaining, serve on bargaining teams, and set GTEA goals for bargaining.
Bargaining ratification vote
Dues-paying members vote to accept or reject contracts negotiated by the GTEA and administration. GTEA follows the majority vote of its dues-paying members. You will have a clear voice in all contracts.
Issue representation
Dues-paying members receive advice and representation when facing issues, such as disciplinary actions. While no professional educators expect issues in their work, misunderstandings and mistakes happen to us all. After invoking your Weingarten Rights, members should contact GTEA. GTEA provides advice to dues-paying members, familiarizes them with college policies, and attends meetings between them and the administration. These descalate most issues. If things escalate, GTEA can connect dues-paying members to legal representation to ensure legal and fair treatment.
Legal advice
Dues-paying members receive access to legal services for work-related issues and referrals to affordable attorneys for non-work issues. Educators don't expect to end up in a courtroom. If you ever do, legal service will defend you and protect your rights on workplace issues ranging from discipline to non-renewals to benefit denials. In addition, you can use its state-wide network of attorneys for personal matters ranging from traffic violations to wills to real estate.
Liability coverage
Dues-paying members receive access to NEA's Educators Employment Liability program. It protects them from financial ruin due to workplace issues in or out of the classroom. It provides up to $300,000 for defense and up to $1,000,000 for damages you must pay.
Consumer discounts
Dues-paying members can use the WEAC Savers Club and NEA shopping discounts to stretch their dollars. These programs offer deals on everything from wireless plans to travel to automobiles.
Financial resource discounts
Dues-paying members can receive discounts on financial services and insurance offered by WEA Benefits and NEA. WEA Benefits caps fees on its investments at a lower level for members. It also discounts auto, home, life, and long-term care insurance. NEA discounts auto, dental, disability, home life, pet, renter, and vision insurance.
Grant and scholarship opportunities
Dues-paying members receive opportunities to earn awards, grants, and scholarships. The WEA Foundation and NEA recognize professional instructors with awards. You can apply to them for grants to support innovations, students, and teaching. The WEA Foundation also offers scholarship opportunities to Wisconsin educators' children to support them as they pursue their degrees.
